Thanks to a rash of well-endowed celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Beyonce and Jennifer Lopez, the rounder, fuller derriere continues to be the trend of the moment. Sensuous curves have replaced the twig-like bodies sought after in the past. For women who were not blessed with those curves naturally, plastic surgery may be a solution. However, women are advised to proceed with caution when seeking butt enhancement procedures, to ensure their surgery is both safe and successful.
The popularity of the big butt
Buttock augmentation procedures have been on the rise, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, with a 58-percent growth between 2012 and 2013. The numbers continued to rise in 2014 as additional techniques provided even more options for women in search of the perfect backside. While this procedure is still not up to the same numbers as breast augmentation, increases in recent years show buttock augmentation is a force to be reckoned with in the plastic surgery industry.
The dangers of “bargain” procedures
Unfortunately, the increased popularity has also increased the risks for patients that do not fully screen their providers or the procedure. Numerous news stories in recent years have illustrated the dangers of seeking buttock enhancement from “bargain” providers. In some cases, those procedure have entailed injections of commercial-grade silicone and even cement to create a fuller look. Women have been seriously injured and some have even died from complications associated with these procedures.
Choosing a surgeon
The first step in ensuring a safe buttock enhancement procedure is to choose a reputable surgeon that is trained and experienced in buttock augmentation. Look for a plastic surgeon with board certification and is willing to show you “before” and “after” photos of previous patients that have had a similar procedure. Keep in mind that any licensed physician can offer cosmetic procedures, but that doesn’t mean all physicians bring the same level of skill and experience to the operating table.
