What is an Arm Lift (Brachioplasty)?
For both men and women, but women especially, the upper arms can be a source of frustration. Exercise and strength training may achieve toned arms in many men and women, but sometimes cannot provide satisfactory results. Age, weight gain and weight loss, and genetics all play a role in the appearance of your upper arms. While exercise is extremely important to your overall health and well-being, it cannot diminish the loose hanging skin of the arms, weakened tissues in the arms, or localized areas of fat in the arms. The only way to correct these issues is through an arm lift or brachioplasty. An arm lift can significantly improve the appearance of the upper arms by eliminating excess skin and fat. Through arm lift surgery, our patients can achieve a more toned, youthful, and proportionate appearance in the arms.
Who is an ideal candidate for an Arm Lift?
Men and women who are in good health and of a normal weight with loose or hanging skin and isolated areas of fat in the upper arms are usually good candidates for arm lift surgery. Patients must also be healthy overall, with no major medical conditions that can be affected by surgery. Ideal candidates maintain a stable weight; do not smoke; and have realistic expectations for surgery.
During your procedure, our Edina plastic surgeon, Christopher J. Kovanda will remove excess skin and fat between the underarm and the elbow. This is done by making an incision on the underside of the upper arm. Once the fat and skin have been reduced, the skin will be tightened to provide a more toned and smooth appearance to the arms. Excessive amounts of isolated fat in the arms may be removed through liposuction. Brachioplasty is performed under general anesthesia or intravenous sedation and, depending on the amount of skin and fat that are removed, takes 2 to 4 hours.
Arm Lift Surgery Recovery
Patients are able to return home the same day as surgery. Swelling and bruising are common after the surgery and should be expected. Drainage tubes may be placed at the incision site to collect any excess blood or fluid for the first few days after surgery. Compression bandages are usually worn to promote proper healing. For the majority of our Edina arm lift surgery patients, swelling should subside within one to two weeks after the procedure. During your surgical consultation, we will provide detailed after-care instructions and answer any questions you may have.
Arm Lift Results
Even with swelling, the results of arm lift surgery should be immediately visible. Arms will appear more toned and proportionate to the body, while the texture of the arms will also be improved.
Arm Lift with Liposuction
Liposuction may be used in conjunction with arm lift surgery to improve the appearance of the arms. For our patients who do not require an arm lift, liposuction may still be used to enhance their overall appearance. Stubborn isolated areas of fat in the body that are not eliminated through exercise and diet can be removed through liposuction. Liposuction may be used to remove isolated fat deposits in the neck, back, arms, hips, waist, inner knees, calves, ankles, cheeks, and thighs. Patients desiring a more toned and shapely contour may benefit from liposuction. Liposuction may also be combined with other treatments, such as tummy tuck surgery and breast augmentation surgery.
