Which Type of Implant is Right for Me?

Once you have decided to have breast augmentation, your next decision will be to choose the best type of implant for your needs. Breast implants were first introduced in the United States in the 1960s and since that time, they have undergone a number of changes and improvements. Today, there are three basic types of breast implants to choose from, as well as a new technique in breast augmentation surgery that doesn’t require the use of implants. To know which is best for you, it is important to understand the pros and cons of each breast augmentation option available today.

Saline Implants

Saline implants consist of an outer silicone shell filled with a sterile saline solution. The shells can be filled after the implant is placed in the breast tissue, allowing for slightly smaller incisions with this procedure. These implants are less expensive and they are available in patients as young as 18. Saline implants tend to feel firmer than other types of implants and if they rupture, there is an almost immediate change to the look of the breast. Saline implants are also more apt to cause rippling on the outside of the breast.

Silicone Implants

Silicone implants have a similar outer shell, but instead of saline, these implants are filled with a gooey silicone material. Silicone tends to look and feel more like natural breast tissue and has a lower risk of rippling and rupture. However, silicone implants are more expensive and may require a larger incision to place them in the breast tissue.

Cohesive Gel Implants

Also known as “gummy bear implants,” these new silicone implants are constructed of a firmer gel similar to gummy bear candies. The original gummy bear implants were approved by the FDA in 2012 and have quickly become one of the most requested types of implants today. The biggest advantage to the gummy bear implant is that it will keep its shape in the event of a rupture. It is possible these implants may also last longer than their counterparts, although they haven’t been around long enough to provide good clinical data on this point.

Fat Transfer

Another new procedure known as fat transfer is now available for breast augmentation. This procedure removes fat from one area of the body, such as the abdomen or thighs, and places it into the breasts. Fat removal is performed via liposuction, while fat grafting can be done by injection.

Fat transfer to the breast is still in the very early stages and not available by many physicians at this time. In 2013, Dr. Christopher Kovanda was the only doctor from the U.S. to travel to France to attend the International Symposiumon Lipomodeling of the Breast, presented by Dr. Emanuel Delay. Dr. Delay is the foremost expert on fat grafting to the breast today, offering valuable training and education in this area.
