Why Men are Choosing Botox (and Other Cosmetic Procedures) Today

botox minneapolis

The number of patients seeking Botox injections grew by a whopping 310 percent between 2000 and 2013, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. What is even more surprising is the fact that more than 385,000 of the patients getting the procedure in 2013 were men. Botox is just one of the aesthetic treatments that is enticing more male patients today.

Reasons behind the Trend

Why is plastic surgery beginning to attract more men? There could be a number of reasons for the trend:

  • Look Good – Men are tuning into the fact that women aren’t the only ones that can used plastic surgery procedures to enhance their looks.

  • Stay Young – The aging process is not restricted to the female set; men are also opting for plastic surgery options to turn back the clock on their appearance.

  • Remain Competitive – In an ever-increasing job market, men are finding that an occasional nip and tuck helps keep them competitive in the younger job pool.

  • Restore Youthful Build – As weight gain continues to plague a large number of Americans, men are turning to liposuction and other body contouring options to shave off stubborn pockets of fat that do not respond to diet and exercise.

  • Social Acceptance – Thanks to many male celebrities “coming out” about their plastic surgery experiences, the idea of cosmetic procedures is becoming much more acceptable for the male patient.

What are they Getting?

As more men turn to their plastic surgeons to meet their aesthetic goals, certain trends are beginning to arise in this patient population. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons lists the following minimally-invasive cosmetic procedures as the most popular for men in 2013:

  • Botox injections
  • Laser hair removal
  • Microdermabrasion
  • Soft tissue fillers
  • Chemical peels

In addition, many more men are going under the knife to enhance their appearance than ever before. The most popular plastic surgery procedures for men in 2013 were:

  • Rhinoplasty (nose reshaping)
  • Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery)
  • Liposuction
  • Gynecomastia (breast reduction)
  • Rhytidectomy (facelift)

Although it is becoming more common for men to seek plastic surgery procedures, it can still be intimidating for a man to enter a plastic surgeon’s office for the first time. Choosing a surgeon that frequently works with male patients can help to ease some of that discomfort.
