Fat Grafting 101: Treatment Options
- Posted on: Sep 2 2015
Fat grafting is a cosmetic procedure that has been gaining steam in recent years. This procedure actually involves two steps; removal of fat via liposuction and injection of fat into another area in need of enhancement. One of the primary reasons behind the success of this procedure is the extreme versatility in treating a variety of areas with the same technique. Check out the many treatment areas where we can use fat grafting for augmentation today.
Fat grafting alone or in combination with implants is a natural and effective way to add size and volume to the breasts. This procedure typically uses fat cells from a larger area like the abdomen or hips, which are then harvested and injected into a variety of locations on the breasts. Fat grafting offers long-lasting results like implants, but the look and feel is even more similar to natural breast tissue.
Fat grafting has also become a popular way to add curves to the backside. Known as a Brazilian butt lift, this procedure also involves removal of fat cells from an area like the thighs, hips or midsection. Fat grafting often takes the place of implants in buttock augmentation, with natural results that are permanent for most patients.
Fat grafting is not restricted to larger treatment areas. This technique can also be used to provide long-lasting enhancement to areas of the face that have lost some of their youthful volume. Common treatment areas for fat grafting include:
- Cheeks to add fullness and definition to mid-face
- Under the eyes to refresh a worn, tired look
- Along the jawline to counter the effects of loose skin and “jowling”
- In the lips to add definition and a fuller pout
Facial fat grafting does not require as many fat cells, so fat removal may be performed in smaller areas like the neck or upper arms. However, larger areas of fat can also be addressed, allowing for augmentation of a number of areas of the face at one time. Once the fat is prepared for injection, the procedure is very similar to injections of dermal fillers. However, the results are much longer-lasting with fat injections, with most patients enjoying permanent results.
