Breast Augmentation: Which Approach is Right for You?

The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery began its physician surveying 2 decades ago. Since that time, their surveys have confirmed that breast augmentation is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures; not just in a given year, but year after year after year. Interest in breast augmentation has remained strong over time, even as we have witnessed significant evolution related to products and techniques. No woman is one-size-fits-all, so breast augmentation shouldn’t be, either. Here, we look at three options for better-looking breasts.
Saline implants consist of a silicone sac that holds a certain amount of saline or sterile salt water. Saline implants can be inserted and then filled, or they may be inserted in a pre-filled state. Some women prefer the peace of mind they feel with saline implants and do not mind losing a bit of natural feel. Recently, structured saline implants have been developed. The various shells and chambers of the structured saline implant facilitate the look and feel one would expect from natural breasts.
After some improvements had been made to silicone implants, this method of breast augmentation surged in popularity. Silicone is more viscous, so feels more like natural breast tissue. This form of implant is soft and elastic, making it suitable for nearly every body type. One key difference between silicone and saline implants is that silicone implants are pre-filled. This means a larger incision is necessary for placement. Recently, form stable silicone implants have been developed. The cohesiveness of the silicone gel enables the implant to retain its shape for a longer period.
The newest method of breast augmentation to become available is fat grafting. Many of our patients can’t help but smile when they learn that it is possible to take fat from one part of their body and put it where they would prefer it to be. This whole idea was once more of a joke; now it is a viable way for women to increase volume and shape. Fat grafting for breast enhancement can achieve approximately 1 cup size of the volume. Proportions may be more prominent when the harvested fat comes from the abdominal area, reducing waist circumference simultaneous to increasing breast size.
